(KENORA) June 30, 2017 – The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament for the Kenora riding, issued the following statement today regarding the construction of Freedom Road on Shoal Lake 40 First Nation:
“I am very happy to see construction has officially begun on Freedom Road. For more than 100 years, Shoal Lake 40 First Nation has been cut off from the mainland. This has caused undue hardship, including the fact that the community has been on a boil water advisory for decades.
“Freedom Road will provide permanent all-weather road access to the community and its residents. This road will greatly increase community safety and mobility. It will also unlock economic opportunities because of the ease of getting on and off reserve.
“Last year, the federal government announced they would commit $20 million towards the construction of Freedom Road, with the Province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg each agreeing to contribute another $10 million. This is very good news to see this tri-partite agreement come together and construction begin on the on-reserve portion of Freedom Road. I look forward to seeing how this road will shape the future of Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.”
