(KENORA) December 4, 2017 – The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora riding), issued the following statement regarding the Hon. Jane Philpott’s, Minister of Indigenous Services, commitment to fund a Treatment Centre for Grassy Narrows First Nation and Wabaseemoong Independent Nations.
The commitment was made during a meeting at Queen’s Park with Grassy Narrows Chief, Simon Fobister, Wabaseemoong Chief, John Paishk, and the Hon. David Zimmer, Ontario Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.
“Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong have suffered the consequences of mercury contamination for far too long. I am extremely pleased that Minister Philpott committed to funding a design assessment to make sure the proposed treatment facility meets all of the necessary criteria prior to starting the construction of the new facility. In addition, the Minister further committed to increasing services for medical transportation and suicide prevention.
“I welcome this announcement and sincerely thank Chief Fobister and Chief Paishk for their commitment and dedication to the well-being of the members of their communities.”
