“Canada will not escalate this trade dispute, nor will we back down – we will defend Canadian workers, their families and our industries” – Nault
(KENORA) June 29, 2018 – The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora riding), released the following statement regarding Canada’s response to steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the United States:
“Our relationship with the United States is complex, yet it remains one of the most important trading relationships in the world. Their decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products was unjust and unwarranted, so it must not go unanswered. To use the justification that Canada is a national security risk is nothing short of absurd.
“Today, our government announced a final list of countermeasures, which equally match those imposed by the U.S. government, and will come into effect on July 1. We will not escalate or back down on these measures. These are necessary measures in order to protect the Canadian steel and aluminum industry, as well as workers and their families.
“The Government of Canada will also invest $2 billion to defend and protect the interests of Canadian workers and businesses in these industries. $250 million will provide support through the Strategic Innovation Fund to help bolster the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturers and better integrate the Canadian supply chain of steel and aluminum.
“Additional measures include; extending the duration of work-sharing agreements by 38 additional weeks under the Employment Insurance program to help employers retain their skilled workforce and avoid layoffs during challenging times. We will also increase funding to provinces and territories to make more job and training programs available to workers affected by these unfair U.S. measures.
“We know how important these industries are to Canadians across the country, but particularly to those here at home in Northwestern Ontario. In the coming days and months, we will continue to closely watch this trade situation in order to best provide support for Canadian workers and their families. We stand behind our steel, aluminum and manufacturing sectors, and we stand behind their workers.”
