(KENORA) June 8, 2017 – The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora riding), issued the following statement regarding the current situation in Eabametoong First Nation:
“On June 6, 2017, Eabametoong First Nation, unfortunately, experienced a fire in a building situated next to their water purification plant reservoir. As a result, their water supply has been contaminated, and the community has declared a State of Emergency. The Nishnawbe Aski Nation Police (NAPS) and the Fire Marshall’s Office are involved in investigating the cause of the fire.
“Currently, a boil water advisory is in effect. The community has received 4000 litres of water from INAC’s regional office and all potable water is being rationed and distributed from the school gymnasium.
“I have personally talked with Chief Elizabeth Atlookan, who has assured me that regional INAC officials are working closely with the community to resolve this serious concern. The community is moving forward with plans to restore potable water service, while reconstruction of the building lost in the fire is underway.”
